Why Famous: A navy man by training, he joined Canada’s fledgling space program in 1983, and in 1984 became the first Canadian in outer space when he served as crew on U.S. Shuttle Mission 41-G. After venturing to space a few more times, he would go on to serve as head of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2005. In 2008 he was elected to Parliament as a Liberal representing Quebec.
