Charbonnier, who went by the professional name of Charb, was already living under police protection due to the firebombing of the magazine in 2011 and their publication of caricatures of the prophet Muhammad.

Four days after his death a rally attended by 2 million people in Paris, had as its slogan "Je suis Charlie" ("I am Charlie")
