Why Famous: Taylor, a pre-eminent historian on 19th and 20th century European diplomacy, reached a wide audience through his lectures on television.
Several of his books, including The Struggle for Mastery in Europe 1848–1918 (1954) and English History 1914–1945 (1965) are considered masterpieces. His 1961 book The Origins of the Second World War was his most controversial and its interpretations and conclusions remain the subject of debate.
