Biography: The second and current Supreme Leader of Iran and the commander-in-chief of Iran's armed forces.
Khamenei was arrested six times before being going into exile during Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's reign. He also suffered an attempted assassination in June 1981, paralyzing his right arm.
An important leader during the Iran–Iraq War in the 1980s, Khamenei developed close ties with the Revolutionary Guards, whose commanders are now elected and dismissed by him and used to suppress opposition to his rule.
