Why Famous: Ortega first served as the leader of Nicaragua during the latter phase of the country's civil war, from 1985 to 1990, where his term in office was noted for a controversial nationalization and land reform movement. He is a leader of the Sandinista left-wing political party and former guerrilla group.
Ortega regained power in 2007 and has been in office ever since. Unrest in Nicaragua began in 2018 and spread throughout the country, resulting in Ortega's administration launching violent crackdowns against demonstrators.
