Biography: As the founder of vertebrate paleontology, for his theories on extinction, as a leading proponent of catastrophism and stratigraphy in geology, and as a vocal opponent to evolution.

He established extinctions as a fact that any future scientific theory of life had to explain at a time when few people believed that extinctions had ever occurred.
