Biography: Gregorio Álvarez was the last of five Presidents to preside over Uruguay's repressive dictatorship. Álvarez participated in the country's 1973 coup, supposedly to counteract the threat of Marxist Tupamaro rebels. Álvarez became Chief of the Army in 1978 and was named president in 1981.

In 1984 Álvarez agreed to elections for a civilian government after a general strike and was replaced by Rafael Addiego as interim president then by Julio María Sanguinetti.

In 2009 Álvarez was convicted of human rights abuses and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He died in prison in 2016.
