Why Famous: Pitman was an English language teacher; most notable for inventing the world's most widely used shorthand system: Pitman shorthand.

While such shorthand writing systems are now mostly forgotten, before the advent of typewriters and, particularly, the ease of modern keyboards, shorthand provided a way for stenographers to transcribe spoken language more quickly than most—a necessity for court transcripts, for instance, or secretaries.
