Full Name: Jack Patrick Dorsey
Profession: Tech Entrepreneur and Co-founder of Twitter
Why Famous: While Dorsey worked in his youth as a fashion model, today he is better known as the CEO of Twitter. He got his start in programming with an interest in dispatch routing, creating open-source software still in use today.
Dorsey dropped out of New York University (NYU) in 1999, having already come up with the basic idea for Twitter. After a while of working in California, he pitched the idea that would become Twitter and attracted sufficient investment to start work.
Since the establishment of Twitter, Dorsey has become a pseudo-political figure given the power of social media and such information networks in political affairs.
His involvement with the U.S. State Department, for instance, led Twitter in 2009 to delay its maintenance so as not to interfere with ongoing protests and social unrest in Iran (the 'Green Revolution'), where many were using Twitter to communicate and coordinate.
More recently, Twitter has become involved in U.S. Presidential elections; particularly after the election of Donald Trump in 2016, which many Democrats blamed on disinformation spread through social media.
Then, on January 8, 2021, Twitter permanently banned Donald Trump—a sitting President of the United States—effectively severing his main line of communication. This was justified as necessary given social unrest, yet Dorsey also commented that it "sets a precedent I feel is dangerous."
