Biography: Bolsonaro took office as President of Brazil in January 2019 after a controversial presidential campaign the previous year. Many of Bolsonaro's comments, described as far-right or populist, have been highly controversial, including opposing abortion, drug liberalization, LGBT rights and affirmative action.

During his presidential campaign he survived an assassination attempt when he was stabbed in the stomach at a campaign rally. He went on to win the election with 55% of the vote.
