Why Famous: Guaidó is one of the leading opposition figures in Venezuela opposing the government of Nicolás Maduro. In January 2019, as the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, he declared himself the rightful President of Venezuela over Maduro. Venezuela has been experiencing an intense political and economic crisis since 2010, marked by increasing authoritarian power, severe inflation and shortages of basic goods.
Guaidó has been recognized as the rightful President by 54 governments around the world. After he became President of the National Assembly he was briefly arrested by government, and has been subject to various acts of intimidation since the presidential crisis began.
An attempted uprising led by Guaidó in April 2019 failed to gather the necessary military support to overthrow Maduro despite international support from the United States and various other nations.
