Biography: Best known as a member of the historic and influential country music Carter Family act in the 1920s and '30s. She was also a member of Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters. The family first began recording their music in the 1920s with Maybelle forming a trio with her sister Sara and brother-in-law A.P. Carter. Later their children would join them.
Carter was the mother of June Carter who performed with the family and the mother-in-law of Johnny Cash. Maybelle was particularly known for her guitar playing, the 'Carter Scratch' technique is named after her.
