Biography: Peebles was an American actor and filmmaker, starting in 1967 with his debut film; The Story of a Three-Day Pass. This film was based on Peebles own novel, written in French, titled La Permission, and was made in France due to the difficulty of working in America as a black director.

After this film debut won an award and garnered him interest from Hollywood studios, Peebles followed this with Watermelon Man (1970). The next year he would release his most famous work, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971).
