Biography: Led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831 that resulted in 55 white deaths. Whites responded with at least 200 black deaths, and Turner was caught and executed.

His actions caused state legislators in Virginia and other southern states to pass new laws prohibiting education of slaves and free blacks, among other restrictions of civil rights.
