Biography: Winfrey began her media career in radio before becoming a news anchor and launching her show 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' in 1986. It ran until 2011 and is credited with popularizing the talk show format and introducing a new confessional style.

The show has been hugely influential in publicly tackling such issues as sexuality, abuse and racism.

Winfrey has been called the most influential woman in the world, and is North America's first multi-billionaire black person.

Her acting in the film 'The Colour Purple' earned her an Academy Award nomination.
