Why Famous: Rachel Maddow has been the host of her own show "The Rachel Maddow Show" since 2008 on US cable television network MSNBC, the winner of three Emmy awards.

Before becoming a radio and TV host, Maddow was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University and worked as an AIDS prison advocate. She began working first as a radio host on a local station then for Air America, appearing from 2005 on conservative Tucker Carlson's MSNBC show "Tucker". She became known as an able debater with informed liberal views and for her style of non-confrontational political analysis.

Openly lesbian since college, Maddow is the first openly gay host of a primetime news program in the US.
