Biography: A member of the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence, along with Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Roger Sherman.

Post independence he served as the 1st Chancellor of New York for 24 years between 1777 and 1801 and as the 1st United States Secretary of Foreign Affairs (1781-83).

Livingston also later became the US Minister to France from 1801 to 1804.
