Polanski's life and career have at times overshadowed by events. In 1969, for instance, Polanski's then-pregnant wife Sharon Tate was murdered along with four friends by members of the Manson Family, led by Charles Manson.
Meanwhile in 1977, Polanski was arrested for allegedly drugging and raping a young girl. He planned to plea guilty to a lesser charge, but when this seemed impossible he fled to Paris. Polanski has since remained a fugitive as far as the United States justice system is concerned.
