Biography: The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) has distinguished Rosa Mota as the greatest female marathon runner of all time.

After earning a bronze medal in the women's marathon at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Mota escalated her performance to win gold at the 1987 World Championships in Rome and then Olympic gold in Seoul in 1988. In doing so, she became the first woman to win multiple Olympic marathon medals.

Mota is also a triple European Championship gold medal winner and is the only woman to be the reigning European, World and Olympic champion at the same time.

In her 11 year career between 1982 and 1992 she averaged 2 marathons per year and won 14 of those races including the Boston Marathon three times, Chicago Marathon twice and the London, Osaka and Rotterdam events once each.

Mota is still one of the most popular personalities in Portuguese sport alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Eusébio, Carlos Lopes, Luís Figo and José Mourinho.
