Biography: Prior to her political career, Tsikhanouskaya was an English teacher and interpreter. Her husband, Sergei Tikhanovsky, had intended to run for president; then when he was arrested, Sviatlana announced that she intended to run in his place.

She has claimed that her campaign was harassed throughout, with Tsikhanouskaya even going into hiding on the night of the election. Despite this, she says that it was love which motivated her running; both for her country and for her husband.

When official results were published, Tsikhanouskaya was reported to have received only 10.12% of the vote; nevertheless, allegations of electoral fraud were quickly raised against the incumbent, Alexander Lukashenko.
