Philip followed up this success with "Joker" (2009) which he directed, co-wrote, and co-produced. The film is an origin story for the DC Comics supervillain and starred Joaquin Phoenix. It was a critical success winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The film was also nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards at which Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for the role.
