Why Famous: Petty rose to prominence by siding with William Pitt the Elder and became one of his Secretaries of State Petty, Both Petty and Pitt preferred cooperation over conflict in the American colonies.

Petty became Prime Minister in 1782 after the death of Rockingham and though only held office for 8 months oversaw The Treaty of Paris, giving the American colonies their independence.

Petty's personality was abrasive and his unpopularity among colleagues led to his resignation in 1783
