Historical Context

The tallest statue in the world when it was completed in 1967 The Motherland Calls remains the tallest statue in Europe and the tallest statue of a woman in the world.

It forms the center of a memorial complex in Volgograd, Russia, that commemorates the WWII Battle of Stalingrad. Designed by the sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and engineer Nikolai Nikitin it stands 85 meters (279 ft) high.
